In meinem letzten Post ging es um Dankbarkeit. Für die positiven Dinge im Leben dankbar zu sein, ist einfach, besonders wenn man durch ein Land wie Madagaskar reist. Das durchschnittliche Monatseinkommen liegt hier bei gerade einmal 40 Euro. Komplizierter ist es, auch dann Dankbarkeit zu empfinden, wenn die Dinge nicht nach Plan verlaufen und in solch schwierigen Situationen trotzdem etwas Positives zu finden. Vor einigen Tagen wurden mir hier auf Madagaskar Reisepass, Kreditkarte und Geld gestohlen. Da es auf der Insel keine deutsche Botschaft gibt, die mir einen vorläufigen Reisepass ausstellt, musste ich meine Weiterreise und den Urlaub mit meiner Mutter auf Mauritius absagen und morgen geht es zurück nach Deutschland. Trotz allem empfinde ich in erster Linie Dankbarkeit: dafür, dass nur ersetzbare Dinge verloren gegangen sind und nicht meine Gesundheit; dafür dass ich in der Lage bin, diese Dinge so einfach zu ersetzen; für gute Freunde, die mir bei der Flugumbuchung und mit unzähligen Telefonaten geholfen haben und natürlich für all die schönen Erinnerungen aus meiner Zeit auf Madagaskar.
In my last post I wrote about gratitude. To be grateful for the good things we have in life is easy, especially when travelling through a country like Madagascar where the average monthly salary is 40 Euros. It is far more complicated to feel gratitude even when things go wrong and to look for the positive in a bad situation. A few days ago, my passport, credit cards and money got stolen from my bag. Since there is no German embassy on the island, I will not be able to receive a temporary passport to continue my travels to Mauritius where I was supposed to meet my mum. Tomorrow I will have to go back to Germany instead. Nevertheless, I feel grateful in many ways: that I only lost replaceable things and that I have the means to replace them without problems; that nothing happened to me and I’m healthy; for good friends all over the world that helped me rebooking my flights and with endless phone calls and of course for all the beautiful memories I made here on Madagascar.
